![]() Thanks to many years of development, it boasts a fantastic level of voice-recognition accuracy, and it fits neatly into all of your Windows applications, including Word. Right now, the clear market leader is Dragon for PC. If those two tools aren’t enough for you, try a third-party program. And it does have the advantage of being built right into Word itself. In our experience, Dictate is not quite as accurate as Windows Speech Recognition, but the application is in its early days and may improve over time. To begin speaking words on the page, open this tab and click the Start button. Now, you should see a new Dictation tab on the ribbon menu. Follow that link to download it, and then relaunch Microsoft Word. While Windows Speech Recognition has been around for years, Microsoft recently introduced a free, experimental dictation plug-in for Microsoft Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint, called Dictate. If that appeals to you, you can set the program to launch automatically whenever you start Windows: Just right-click on the app, choose Options, and hit Run at Startup. With Speech Recognition, you can control all kinds of computer actions, including launching programs and searching the computer, using only your voice. Once you’ve completed the initial voice-recognition setup, you’ll always be able to launch the utility from the taskbar (as previously described). Over time, the system should get better at recognizing your voice, and you can also train it by right-clicking on the Speech Recognition console, choosing Configuration, and clicking Improve Speech Recognition. Windows has a short step-by-step wizard that will walk you through the process step by step. The first time you run this software, you’ll need to teach the utility to recognize your voice. To launch it, type “windows speech recognition” into the search box on the taskbar, then click the app when it appears. Practice at first by reading from a printed source (e.g.The integrated voice-recognition service will work on any Windows application, including Microsoft Word.Perform the voice training / user enrollment.Make sure background noise is at a minimum.Use a digital microphone instead of an analog one.Speech recognition software is not perfect and may make mistakes in the translation of your voice. Speak in a clear voice and pronounce each word. So, make sure you think about it first before saying it. The computer will attempt to transcribe everything you say. When dictating, try not to look at the computer screen since this may distract you from your thoughts and cause you to loose concentration. With practice, you should get better at dictating to a machine and maybecome very good at dictating without the use of printed materials. These aids will help you to gather your thoughts before speaking. If you are new to dictation, it may help to begin by using notes or handwritten ideas. Important Things to Consider in Dictation Once it has been accepted by the computer, the word will be added to the list below indicating that it is in your Lexicon. You may have to repeat this step several times while the computer records different samples of the way the word sounds. After you type the word in the box, press the "Record Pronounciation" button and say the word. A Microsoft SAPI dialog will appear allowing you to add/edit words in your user Lexicon (i.e., the database that stores individual words and sounds). You can train the computer to recognize the sounds of individual words. The computer isn't typing the right word. You can assign a command phrase as well as the computer's audible response for both the 'starting' and 'stopping' of dictation. You can also program voice commands to activate/toggle the dictation mode. The use of a key in this manner can allow you to quickly change from command to dictation mode and back without having to issue a verbal command. You can also program a key on the keyboard to activate/toggle the dictation mode.
